"The Ghanaian proverb 'se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi' roughly translates to 'it is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten'. This spirit of celebration and reclamation of lost heritage is of great importance to my art and my life in general, and so I aimed to visually encapsulate those ideas in this piece based around the Adinkra symbol synonymous with the proverb. Surrounded by patterns inspired by West Afrikan fabric prints, the Sankofa bird looks back to inspect the silhouette of the continent as the ancestors watch over. The bird stands upon a book inscribed with the words of Marcus Garvey, emphasising the importance of a strong foundation of historical and cultural knowledge. The adrinkra symbol for peace, the Ankh, a Jamaican flag, and the Lion of Judah all also feature in the composition."
